The ROD is redirecting 1st SHAM from South America (currently in Venezuela) to west Africa (specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo) to assist with the Ebola outbreak there. SHAM personnel will initially not be treating Ebola patients directly due to the lack of protective equipment. Rather they will establish a forward operating base where medical supplies can be staged and that can accommodate ROD supply aircraft. The affected area is in the north-east of the DRC and in Uganda, so access from the sea will be extremely difficult.
Once protective equipment and appropriately trained personnel are on site, ROD personnel have the option of treating patients, or providing other humanitarian support in the affected area. 1st SHAM should reach the DRC coast by May 30th.

I have had a hospital/assistance ship on the to do list for years. This weekends must do project thanks to the ROD 👍
